1877 - Wintermode in Peterson´s Magazine

Willkommen im Neuen Jahr! Peterson´s Magazine nimmt zu Anfang des Jahres 1877 die Stimmung der aktuellen Jahreszeit mit einem Genrebild auf - idyllische Winterfreuden, wie man sie sich kaum schöner wünschen kann:

Illustrationen von wärmender Oberbekleidung sind nun angesagte Inspriationsquellen. Und aufgepasst: Für jene, die dem rutschigen Vergnügen nicht zugewandt sind, bestimmen auch im Winter Schleppen die modischen Kleider. Ob die Damen damit damals wirklich auf unbefestigten Straßen flaniert sind? Zumindest machen uns dies zeitgenössische Illustrationen - und die zugehörigen Unterschriften, bzw. Beschreibungen - glauben.

Das colorierte Modebild für Februar 1877 zeigt dem Motto "The Winter Prominade" angesagte Pariser Modelle. Was man eben so trägt, wenn man zu Fuß oder mit der Kutsche unterwegs ist:

Fig. 1 - Walking-dress of deep linden-flower-green camel´s hair. - The underskirt is of silk and plain. The camel´s hair over-dress and mantle is trimmed with a deep, rich, worsted ball fringe; bow of cardinal-red a the waist of the mantle. Very dark green felt bonnet, trimmed with cardinal-red.

Fig. 2 - Carriage-dress of dark-gray silk, trimmed with alternate ruffles of scantily gahtered silk and knife-pleating; cloak of seal-brown velvet trimmed with bands of seal fur; bonnet of velvet, of the color of the cloak, trimmed with a bird with blue gray plumage and pipings of the color of the dress. 

Fig. 3 - Walking-dress of plain black silk. - The Paletot is of gray basket-cloth, made to partially fit the figure; has large pockets, and is trimmed with fur. White felt bonnet, trimmed with a white feather, blue velvet and pink roses.

Fig. 4 - Walking dress of striped camel´s hair of two shades of brown. The petticoat is of silk, of the color of the lighter brown in the over-dress; it is trimmed wutg a broad diagonal puffing; the tunic is very long, both in front and in the back, is slightly looped quite low down and trimmed with a knife-peating of the silk. The very deep, straight jacket is finished with worsted tassel fringe; cuffs and hood of the silk, the latter trimmed with the fringe. Thimble-shaped, light-brown felt bonnet, ornamented with long rows of ribbon and ivy-leaves.

Fig. 5 - Carriage-dress of ink-blue vevet and camal´s hair - The petticoat of velvet has one deep flounce with a puffing above it. The ink-blue camel´s hair overdress and the Marie-Antoinette mantle are trimmed with a band of gray India camel´s hair. Brown felt bonnet, trimmed with cardinal red.
